Installation Instructions
Mac OS X:
NOTE: If you previously installed UltraList Backup on your Mac prior to June 17, you will need to re-intall the latest version of UltraList Backup below.
- Download the application: UltraListBackup.zip (version 1.0.3)
- If you are downloading with Safari, it may automatically extract the application from the zip file. If not, simply double-click on the downloaded zip file, this will extract the application file, named "UltraList Backup"
- Move the application file to your Applications folder.
Windows:
- Download the application: UltraListBackup.zip (version 1.0.3)
- Open the downloaded file and extract the file called UltraListBackup.jar
- To run UltraList Backup you will need to have Java installed on your machine. You can download the latest version of Java from http://www.java.com.
- If Java is installed on your machine, you should be able to simply double-click on the UltraListBackup.jar file to launch.
Using UltraList Backup
Start by launching the application. A window such as the one below should appear.

UltraList Backup is now waiting for a connection from your iPhone/iPod Touch. The "Network name" is the name as it will appear on the network (and from within UltraList running on your device). You can change this name using the "Change..." button. (Note: sometimes the old name will remain on the network for some time along with the new name).
Performing Backup
To perform a backup of your UltraList data on your iPhone/iPod touch:
- Open UltraList on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
- From the "Home" screen, touch the "Action" button on the lower right hand corner and choose the Backup/Restore action.
- On the next screen touch the "BACKUP" button.
- This will bring you to a screen titled "Choose desktop". You should see a desktop called "UltraList Backup" (or whatever Network name you are using in UltraList Backup). If you do not see any desktops, make sure that your iPhone/iPod Touch is connected to your Wi-Fi.
- Touch the network name corresponding to your desktop.
- This will bring you to a screen that indicates that the backup is in progress. Depending on the amount of data you have this could take a while. Once complete, it should say "Backup Complete". Hit the OK button.
Note: Each backup is unqiue to a specific device and a specific UltraList product. See the below sections if you need to restore the backup to a different device or different UltraList product.
Performing Restore
Restoring data to your iPhone/iPod Touch should only be necessary if for some reason you deleted UltraList from your device and had to reinstall it. If you lost your iPhone/iPod Touch and need to restore to a new device, see the next section "Performing Restore to New Device". If you still have your original iPhone/iPod Touch and it still has the data you want, use section "Transferring Data to Another Device or to Another UltraList Product".
To restore your UltraList data onto your iPhone/iPod Touch:
- Open UltraList on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
- From the "Home" screen, touch the "Action" button on the lower right hand corner and choose the Backup/Restore action.
- On the next screen, touch the "RESTORE" button.
- This will bring you to a screen that indicates that the restore is in progress. Depending on the amount of data you have this could take a while. Once complete, it should say "Restore Complete". Hit the OK button.
Performing Restore To New Device
Use this procedure if you have lost your iPhone/iPod Touch and need to restore to a new device. This procedure involves locating the backup data on your desktop computer and moving it to another location on your desktop.
- You will first need to locate the folder where the backups are stored on your desktop computer:
For Mac:
Macintosh HD:Users:your_username:Library:Application Support:UltraList:deviceBackups
For Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\UltraList\deviceBackups
For Vista:
C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Roaming\UltraList\deviceBackups
Where: your_username is your particular user name on your computer.
- There should be a folder that has a long name with just letters and numbers (represents your iPhone/iPod device). Inside that folder should be a folder for the particular UltraList product you have (ultralist_basic, ultralist_plus, etc.). Make a copy of that product folder (selecting it then hitting command-C, or control-C). Then go back to the above "deviceBackups" folder and paste it there. Then rename it to "transfer".
- Make sure that UltraList Backup is running on your desktop computer.
- On your iPhone/iPod Touch launch UltraList (or whatever UltraList app you want to receive the data).
- From the "Home" screen, touch the "Action" button on the lower right hand corner and choose the Backup/Restore action.
- On the next screen, touch the "RESTORE" button.
- This will bring you to a screen titled "Choose desktop". Make sure to set "Transfer Folder" to ON. Then, under "Available desktops", you should see a desktop called "UltraList Backup" (or whatever Network name you are using in UltraList Backup).
- Touch the network name corresponding to your desktop.
- This will bring you to a screen that indicates that the restore is in progress. Depending on the amount of data you have this could take a while. Once complete, it should say "Restore Complete". Hit the OK button.
- If you had already entered data into UltraList before this restore, the restored data should merge with any existing data.
Transferring Data to Another Device or to Another UltraList Product
Use this procedure if you are upgrading to another UltraList Product (such as UltraList Plus from UltraList), or you would like to just transfer your data to another device (where you have both devices). For this procedure, always make sure you set the "Transfer Folder" option to ON.
- Open the UltraList app you wish to transfer the data from on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
- From the "Home" screen, touch the "Action" button on the lower right hand corner and choose the Backup/Restore action.
- On the next screen, touch the "BACKUP" button.
- This will bring you to a screen titled "Choose desktop". Make sure to set "Transfer Folder" to ON. Then, under "Available desktops", you should see a desktop called "UltraList Backup" (or whatever Network name you are using in UltraList Backup).
Now you have saved all your data to a special transfer folder.
- Open the UltraList app you wish to receive your data on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
TROUBLESHOOTING
The most common problem you may encounter is that UltraList on the iPhone/iPod touch cannot see UltraList backup running on your desktop because of firewall settings on your desktop computer. The instructors for resolving such an issue are different for Mac and Windows.
Mac OS X:
Start by opening the System Preferences on your Mac desktop. There, on the top row under "Personal" should be something called "Security" (looks like a house). Click on "Security" and you should then see a screen that has three choices: "General", "FileVault" and "Firewall". Click on "Firewall"
Now you should see three options: "Allow all incoming connections", "Allow only essential services" and "Set access for specific services and applications".
The first option "Allow all incoming connections" will allow the iPhone to see UltraList backup, but if you are not comfortable about allowing all connections, then you can also use the third option "Set access for specific...", in which case, you will want to add UltraList Backup to the list of applications. There is a little [+] box under that table that will allow you to select your copy of UltraList Backup (from wherever you keep it) and it will add it to this list. Note: when using the "Set access for specific..." option, you may also need to grant permission for other programs you use such that they can also see the internet.
Windows:
Please consult with your firewall software on how to allow access for port 1280. This is the default port that UltraList Backup will try to use.
iPhone/iPod Touch:
If you are having trouble connecting, or you connect but the backup/restore does not seem to be working, there are a few things you can look for:
- Check to make sure the device is connected to Wi-Fi and the same Wi-Fi router to which your desktop computer is connected. Sometimes its possible to connect to a neighbors Wi-Fi without realizing it.
- On your iPhone/iPod Touch, go to the device's Settings app and then under Wi-Fi turn it OFF, wait a little bit, then turn it back ON. This sometimes resets its network connection and helps it get a fresh connection.
- In rare cases, resetting the entire device could help. Do this by holding the power button down until a red slider appears and activating the slider. Then power the device back up.
